Duke received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1972. After completing an internship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and a residency in Pediatrics at Mount Sinai, he did a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. While an attending pediatric hematologist and oncologist at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago, he managed the hospital’s blood bank at the University.
His career with the American Red Cross (ARC) began in 1980, when he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work as the Chief Medical Officer at the ARC Blood Center. While there, he created numerous successful clinical programs including the tissue bank, a therapeutic apheresis program, an intraoperative autologous program and an active clinical research program. Dr. Kasprisin was the Chief Medical Officer for the American Red Cross Transplantation Services from 1994 until its closure in 2005. He has published numerous articles and books in the areas of pediatric transfusion medicine, blood banking, apheresis and tissue transplantation.
He is an active member of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). During his affiliation, he was appointed Chair of the Standards and Procedures Committee, and he was elected to the positions of Secretary of the Board of Governors and later to the office of President. Dr. Kasprisin continues to serve on the executive committee of the Board of Governors and is also a member of the Sentinel Committee on Tissue Associated Infections. Currently, he is the AATB representative to the UNOS/Medical Examiner workgroup, and the AATB liaison to the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
